Detox Diet: General Overview
This short program is not so much a detoxification/cleansing process as it is a healing process to restore liver function. A healthy liver can greatly enhance weight loss.
The bulk of the foods should be raw nutrient-dense, high-fiber vegetables, minus sugars, refined foods, refined fats (trans fats), and starchy foods like potatoes.
Anticancer foods will be the healthiest and will bring you to a state of health the fastest. That is why this first step includes the cruciferous family of vegetables, as they have anticancer properties (enzymes that detoxify potential carcinogens). Sprouts - especially the cruciferous type like broccoli - are one of the most nutrientdense foods around, loaded with huge quantities of enzyme activity and anticancer factors. As a matter of fact, these sprouts have been found to contain 10–100 times the anticancer properties of mature broccoli. Omega 3 fats (flax oil, walnuts and fish oil) also have anticancer properties. Nuts and seeds are loaded with nutrition as well, but they need to be raw and germinated (soaked overnight), as you will learn in this chapter.
You can have some fruits but only an amount equal to one-third of the total vegetables you eat. You will be drinking three 8 oz cranberry drinks each day. You will also take a concentrated greens supplement to build up your potassium reserves and improve liver function. You'll be eating apples between meals and plenty of raw nuts, with some other fruits and beans. You will keep animal proteins out of the program unless your blood sugars get too low, in which case you'll need to add a small amount each day.
